How to write this answer
- Discuss Cover the main aspects, with arguments on more than one side.
For Ethics: Concepts and Thinkers: Define the concepts, name a thinker, and give a short administrative example.
For this question: Keep accountability and integrity as two named sections.
Analyse the professor's act through two lenses the question names: Accountability (who answers for the report) and integrity (honesty about how it was made).
A PhD evaluation is a judgement entrusted to a named expert because of that person's own knowledge. Using AI to produce it, even with some edits, changes who actually made the judgement.
Accountability
- The examiner signs the report and remains answerable for every judgement in it; AI cannot be held responsible for an unfair or wrong assessment.
- The candidate's career depends on it, so an evaluation that is not the examiner's own considered view fails the duty of care.
Integrity
- Presenting AI-generated text as one's own is a form of misrepresentation, the same wrong universities punish in students.
- Uploading an unpublished thesis to an AI tool may breach confidentiality and the candidate's intellectual property.
- AI may produce plausible but wrong comments, so the report may not reflect the thesis at all.
What would have been ethical
- Declining the assignment or asking for more time; or using AI only for limited help (language, checking references) with disclosure to the university, while forming the judgement personally.
Lack of time explains the lapse but does not excuse it; the principle is simple: The expert whose name is on a judgement must be its author.
